What to Wear?...
By Adam Dykes

Okay. The ASH BASH is coming (real soon), and you still aren’t sure what you want to do for the costume contest. Here are some ideas that will hopefully help you get rolling.

Star Wars: You could do a fighter pilot—either Rebel or Imperial. The basis for both is essentially a jumpsuit. The Rebel would be orange, and the Imperial would be black. Both use black boots and gloves, which should be easy to get hold of. The trickiest part of either would be the helmet. Fortunately, there are folks out there who make them. The Imperial pilot’s helmet is more common, I think, but you should be able to find either. If you wanted to do the Rebel pilot and can’t find a helmet, you could probably get a modern flight helmet and do it over to resemble the Rebel one without too much difficulty. After that, you’d need to do the chest plate (both have them) and harness setup. The Imperial pilot’s rig is more complicated in this area, but I’ve seen them online already made. As for the pistols they carry, you could get an old Star Wars toy and gut it, putting the innards from an airsoft gun into the shell. Either of these costumes would take some work, but not too much if you get started quickly. You could, of course, do a stormtrooper, but that involves a seriously large amount of work and a fair amount of money, or a huge amount of money. If you’ve got the resources for it, though, it would, of course, look awesome.

Cowboy: This one is easy. Just get the boots and jeans, an appropriate shirt, and a cool Stetson (cowboy hat). Make sure to remove any modern logos, of course. There are airsoft six-shooters out there, and even a lever-action rifle that would be perfect. Finding holsters and such is also easy, since there are plenty of places that sell that sort of gear. As for exactly what type of cowboy look you want to go for, just pick your favorite western movie or show and you’ll find plenty of inspiration.

Gojira (a.k.a: Godzilla): It may sound impossible, but its actually quite do-able. The trickiest part is finding the suit. If you know how and have the time, you could possibly build one, but simply buying one is probably a more viable option, at this point. If all else fails, and you’re willing to forgo the finer detailing on the character, there are some six foot tall inflatable Godzillas out there (I used to have one), which could be rigged for costume use with a little work. You would need to cut vision and breathing holes, of course, and build in a sealable seam so you can get into and out of the rig. If you can install some sort of cooling device, that would be good, too. You would also need to put in some padding to make the form bulk out in the right places. Now for the fun part—the radioactive fire breath. You’ll need some small, fully automatic airsoft gun. Make sure it's non-blowback, since this is going to be mounted near you’re mask. You will need to build a harness frame to hold the gun at Gojira’s jaw. I recommend mounting so that it sits along the lower jaw to fire out of the mouth. Make sure the mount is solid enough to handle the weight of the gun and the abuse caused by running around outside. Firing may seem tricky, but Gojira himself has come to the rescue. If you watch the original movies, you’ll notice that a lot of the time he uses his gnarly breath, he leans forward just a bit and lowers his arms ever so slightly. What you can do is run a line from the gun’s trigger around the mount to one of your arms. This way, the gun will shoot whnever you lower the 'trigger arm'. You'll also need to be very sure you can get at the gun's magazine and safety, since you'll have to be even more sure to unlad and clear the gun anytime you're not on the field in a game or shooting at the firing zone. (Even more so than usual.) If you could rig the trigger setup so that the mouth opens whenever you shoot, that would be the icing on the cake, so to speak.

Narc: This was an old video game (from the days before home systems). It had one or two butt-kicking special force police type characters who ran around blasting bad guys. All you need for this one is some bright blue pants, a matching color flack vest-looking top, and a matching color motorcyle helmet with a dark visor. You'll need to find a way to build your mask into the helmet, but that shouldn't be too hard, since you can remove some of the thick padding most helmets of this type have. For shoes, all you need is some black boots (the pants go over them). You'll need two guns. One is a small submachine gun--an MP5K should do nicely. The other needs to look like a sort of one-handed long-barrel rocket/grenade launcher. The easiest way to do this one is probably to get am M79 grenade launcher, take the fittings (sight/etc.) off of the barrel, and put on a barrel extension that has some narrow cutouts along the sides. You could also put a cowling assembly with the aforementioned cutouts over a repeating shotgun of some sort, which would give you multiple shots before you need to reload. If you prefer, you could do the red version, which is identical, but substituting bright red for bright blue in the costume. All you'd need then is the character's strut as you cruise around the field.

Whatever you decide to do, time is getting really short, so don't delay.
