Overview:
The first in a new series, these Bolt Action Rifles are offered by Tokyo Marui. The “Real-Shock” version sports a faux wood stock, similar to the AK and Thompson series AEGs, while the “Pro-Sniper” and “G-Spec” receive a flat black stock. All VSR rifles have a very light, toy-like weight, but it does make the rifles easy to run around with all day. Removable iron sights are standard for the Real-Shock and Sniper versions, while the G-Spec is given a sight rail in place of sights.

The VSR series all come with metal receivers and an adjustable trigger group for both trigger pull and stroke. The “Wood” and Sniper versions have a tapered barrel, while the G-Spec comes with a shortened bull barrel and a silencer. The Hop-Up system is a slide type similar to the AK, located along the left side of the barrel, which can be easily adjusted by the user with minimal effort.

Magazines are a removable type located on the bottom of the stock, capacity is 30 bb’s. The Real-Shock version has a recoil feature, while both Sniper and G-Spec do not. Instead, they receive an internal air brake for almost silent operation during firing.

Capabilities:
The bolt pull on all rifles are very easy and smooth. Trigger feel, although a little hard out of the box, is responsive. The adjustability feature on the trigger for personal preferences is a welcome addition not found on most production bolt rifles. (Excluding aftermarket triggers) Accuracy for all rifles are surprisingly very good, as the targets below will show. Testing was conducted using stock rifles (rested), firing Excel .20g BB’s at 8 meters indoors. Hop adjusting is simple and positive. Outdoor gaming effective ranges are about 150-160 feet for a decent impact to be felt. Players can still float out shots farther than that, but the chance of players not feeling the hit increase. Although the barrels on these VSR’s are short they deliver far greater range than any AEG of similar barrel length.

At this time, there are several manufacturers that carry aftermarket parts for the VSR. The largest company is Laylax, carrying a full line of upgrade parts and accessories. Upgrade potential for this series are almost the same as the Maruzen APS2 line. With a few simple parts such as springs, pistons, and barrels, much higher velocities, ranges, and accuracy can be achieved. Other companies and tuners have made performance levels equal to or sometimes better than “production” upgraded APS2’s and even equal to high end custom guns such as the Killer Studio Predator for a fraction of the cost. Once upgraded, game ranges can extend out and pass 250 feet with very good accuracy. Additionally, an upgraded VSR-10 is a lot easier to cycle than an APS-2 or M40 of equal power.

One advantage VSR-10’s have for Airsoft Hawaii is a special velocity rule involving sniper guns. For Airsoft Hawaii bolt action, single shot, spring powered rifles can be upgraded up to 450fps using 0.20g bb’s. Battery, gas, and pump operated guns, like the PSG-1, Tanaka M24, and Maurzen 870, still follow the 400fps limit. This extra velocity gives snipers greater range and equalize bolt action guns which normally have a disadvantage in a full-auto world. Check the Airsoft Hawaii Rules section for more details about the higher velocity restriction.

Editorial note by Grant Woo:
Tyler has become very proficient in tuning VSR-10’s. When he plays he uses a G-Spec version which he upgraded to 430fps. The farthest I have ever witnessed him shoot someone was 270 feet away (trust me, out of curiosity I measured it). He is able to get this great range with only the 303mm barrel. As a comparison the MC51 has a 285mm barrel (about 5/8th of an inch shorter than the G-Spec). I have never seen a MC51 shoot 270 feet. The only short barreled gun that I have seen come close is the Double Trap MP5 by Killer Studio in Japan. Tyler has a wealth of experience from upgrading more VSR-10‘s than anyone else. Most of the VSR snipers at Airsoft Hawaii have had work done by Tyler. If you have any questions about this gun I would advise talking to him.
